The ABS disclosed in Japanese Patent Laid-Open Application No. 59-205434 comprises two mode sensors, a pressure sensor, a comparison device for comparing each mode sensor's detection value with a predetermined reference value, and an electro-mechanical device for increasing the braking force applied to a wheel in case the pressure sensor's detection value is higher than the predetermined reference value. The pressure sensor detects the pressure applied to a wheel, and generates an output signal corresponding to the detected pressure. The electro-mechanical device comprises a fluid pressure supply device, a fluid pressure chamber, a device for controlling the fluid pressure within the fluid pressure chamber, and a piston for displacing the fluid pressure chamber toward a wheel. The fluid pressure supply device receives a fluid pressure (a pressure corresponding to the pressure applied to the wheel) and generates the fluid pressure which corresponds to the pressure applied to the wheel. The fluid pressure supply device is disposed in the fluid pressure chamber. The device for controlling the fluid pressure of the fluid pressure chamber comprises a flow-rate increasing valve for increasing the flow-rate of fluid passing through the fluid pressure chamber, and a flow-rate decreasing valve for decreasing the flow-rate of fluid passing through the fluid pressure chamber. The flow-rate increasing valve and the flow-rate decreasing valve are provided in series in the fluid pressure chamber. The piston is disposed in the fluid pressure chamber. The piston is moved toward the wheel by a fluid pressure acting on the fluid pressure chamber. When the fluid pressure in the fluid pressure chamber is decreased to a certain level or below, the piston is moved to a limit position. The flow-rate increasing valve is closed when the pressure applied to the wheel is smaller than a reference value. In this situation, the flow-rate decreasing valve receives the fluid pressure in the fluid pressure chamber and generates a fluid pressure corresponding to the fluid pressure in the fluid pressure chamber. Therefore, the amount of fluid passing through the flow-rate increasing valve is increased. Accordingly, the fluid pressure in the fluid pressure chamber is also increased. The piston is moved to the limit position. Therefore, the amount of fluid passing through the flow-rate increasing valve and the amount of fluid passing through the flow-rate decreasing valve
